Safe Sleep Week is March 9–13, and these 10 facts highlight what every parent, caregiver, & community member should know to help keep babies safe—every nap, every night, everywhere baby sleeps.
1. Babies are safest sleeping alone, on their back, in a crib, cradle, or bassinet
A dedicated sleep space that meets Canadian safety standards reduces the risk of suffocation and sleep‑related injury.
2. Every sleep matters—naps and nighttime
Safe sleep practices aren’t just for bedtime. Short naps on unsafe surfaces can be just as dangerous.
3. A firm, flat surface is essential
A mattress with a tightly fitted sheet helps keep baby’s airway open and reduces the risk of sinking or rolling into unsafe positions.
4. Adult beds, couches, and chairs are not safe for baby
Even a quick nap on soft or sloped surfaces can lead to suffocation, entrapment, or falls—these tragedies can happen silently and quickly.
5. Keep the sleep space free of soft items
Baby nests, loungers, blankets, quilts, bumper pads, mattress toppers, sleep positioners, stuffed animals, and soft toys all pose suffocation risks.
6. Soft products may look cozy, but they’re not safe for sleep
Items marketed as “snuggly,” “supportive,” or “comforting” can block a baby’s airway or trap heat.
7. Keep cords far away from baby’s sleep area
Electrical cords and window covering cords can strangle a baby. Choose window coverings without long, accessible cords.
8. Prevent overheating with simple, fitted sleepwear
A lightweight sleeper is enough. Overheating increases the risk of sleep‑related injury.
9. Skip hats and remove outerwear indoors
Hats, snowsuits, and jackets trap heat and aren’t safe for sleep. Remove them as soon as you come inside.
10. A properly sized sleep sack can replace a blanket
Sleep sacks keep baby warm without loose bedding. Make sure the size fits your baby’s age and weight.
Every sleep counts. Make every sleep a safe one.
