🧡 November is Adoption and Permanency Education Month

Each November, we recognize Adoption and Permanency Education Month—a time to reflect on the importance of permanency for children, youth, families, and communities across Ontario. At CCAS, we are committed to promoting safety, belonging, and lifelong connections for every child and youth we serve.

🌱 What Is Permanency?

Permanency is more than a placement—it’s about enduring relationships and meaningful connections that support a young person’s identity, sense of belonging, and overall well-being. When children and youth cannot remain with their primary caregivers, child welfare agencies work collaboratively with families and communities to explore safe, supportive permanency options. These may include kinship care, adoption, legal custody, or customary care.

Collaborative planning that includes the voices of children, youth, families, and communities is essential. Permanency planning must honour cultural identity, family ties, and the continuity of relationships that help young people thrive.

🎯 Why This Month Matters

Adoption and Permanency Education Month is a province-wide initiative that:

  • Raises awareness about the importance of permanency and the positive impact of stable, loving family environments.
  • Provides education through events and resources that inform the public about the adoption and permanency process.
  • Connects people by creating space for adoptees, birth families, adoptive families, and professionals to share experiences and build community.
  • Addresses misconceptions by offering accurate information and real-life stories that challenge outdated views of adoption and child welfare.

📅 Events and Activities

Throughout November, organizations like the Adoption Council of Ontario (ACO) host a variety of online and in-person events, including:

  • Keynote presentations and professional training days for caregivers and child welfare professionals.
  • Storytelling sessions featuring personal journeys of adoption and permanency.
  • Resource sharing to help prospective caregivers and adoptive parents understand the needs of children and youth in care.
